A layman or a sailor could easily follow and appreciate. The few simple diagrams were perfect, just enough explanation for a non-yachtie to understand. Not over the top at all.I can not see the validity of some of the criticisms; and the one star ratings were ridiculous. For instance saying the book was "disjointed" It is a collection of about 20 different experiences, not a novel. It doesn't have a plot, it is real life.One reviewer saying it had too much jargon, another not enough technical detail. For goodness sake I know you can't please everyone but it is a bit absurd. It is like buying a book on aircraft and saying it had too much aviation jargon.I have read three other books on the subject and this is as good as any. Well researched and good journalism in fact.While I have never experienced anything like as extreme, I have crossed the pacific, two up on a 65 foot sloop. I have worked out of Sydney on a fishing boat, a trawler, when I was young. OsierIn the final days of 1998, 115 yachts set out from Sydney, Australia toward the Tasmanian capital of Hobart in another running of a traditional race. This one is sometimes called the Mt. Everest of yacht racing, because it takes its entrants through dangerous waters and often through perilous weather, too. This did not turn out to be the deadliest race ever in yachting history, but it certainly was the deadliest Sydney-Hobart race. Its sailors found themselves battling a storm of incredible power, one that the weather bureau never expected to turn into such a monster.I love true adventure tales. "Into Thin Air" and "Shadow Divers" are among my favorite titles. I therefore purchased this book with considerable anticipation, and while I am not sorry I bought it - I did read all of it, and no one forced me to do so - I found it a disappointment. It somehow manages to take what ought to be a thrilling human story, and bog it down in endless technical details.See all 13 customer reviews...
