I think what disappointed me was my expectation that Ms. Diffenbaugh's writing and character development would be as great as it was in "The Language of Flowers."The areas that detracted from the story was the character of the mother and her young daughter; their behavior was almost frenetic without any let-up. The mother, although she did develop in the end, was unlikeable. She wasn't unlikeable because of her many flaws, but I couldn't imagine her having a friend like the one she had (which was not developed at all, just a name). I would have like to see an argument between the both of them, something to clue me in on why they'd be best friends, other than the friend is a convenient babysitter. The characterizations of the grandparents were interesting and I found them to be realistic. The uniqueness of the grandfather's hobby and his relationship to his grandson provided some depth and much interest to the story.I found myself skimming over the parts of the mother so I could read about her son and his girlfriend. Their characters had a poignancy about them that kept you reading and rooting for their relationship very unlike the relationship between the mother and her love interests.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Read it. Loved it.By jrGRITSThen read the reviews and thought...wow did we read the same book. To me, there are many very-real, multi-generational characters, and friends with Letty at the center. I felt like I was experiencing her chaos first hand when her support structure collapses. Letty has to stop, grow up, and continually make difficult decisions for herself, her children, and everyone she touches. I love the twists and turns that evolve as Letty races through her complex life--from teenager frame of mind to mother of two children (one a teenager)--when she is in her early thirties. Relax, read it, and see life from Letty's eyes.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.A wonderful second novelBy JeffGVanessa Diffenbaugh's first novel, The Language of Flowers, was one of the best first novels I have read in quite some time. I was prepared for a letdown with her sophomore effort, mainly because I did not think it was possible for her to achieve the heights of her first novel, but also because of some of the thoughtful reviews I read. For me, the letdown never came. She tackles the subjects of poverty, teenage mothers, single parenthood, and the challenges faced by illegal immigrants struggling to make better lives for themselves and their families in compelling and heartfelt fashion. Most impressive is her ability turn a simple and not particularly exciting plot line into a real page-turner. As with her first novel, I found We Never Asked for Wings very difficult to put down.See all 377 customer reviews...
