Matron Malice, unwilling to accept her son's defection and out of favor with her demonic goddess Loth, raises the corpse of Drizzt's father Zak to search for her son. Can Drizzt escape his mother and find freedom or will he fall victim to the cruelty of the drowI really enjoyed exile. The artwork was beautiful. Drizzt was well-drawn and the characters are well fleshed out. Drizzt's friendship with the crippled gnome and his panther were well portrayed. I also felt sadness for Zak being forced to hunt down his son, and I felt sorry for Malice's consort Rizzen.The only thing I would've liked to see is more on the drow culture and how it worked. With the amount of elves killed annually to loth they must have amazing reproductive powers. Also, the role of the men as second-class citizens is never particularly explained. For instance what prevents the males from rebelling The women for the most part walk around unarmed and unarmored in skimpy costumes unsuited for combat... The culture as it is portrayed doesn't entirely work for me. I know drow women are supposed to be more charismatic and magically inclined...But this is never particularly shown. Also, surely in a society like this love and kindness must exist to some degree and yet the harshness and cruely of the drow is unceasing.Overall a wonderfully illustrated tale, with a few adult elements (human sacrifice, demonology etc, murder etc.). I figured I'd check out the graphic novel versions to see what the world looked like and am pleased to say it looks the way I pictured when reading "Homeland."
