The series focuses on recent veterans who are recovering from war injuries and PTSD, and trying to make a go of civilian life, and the people who are their families or become their friends and families, and the love and patience they give in helping these fine veterans to heal and become whole and healthy again. Some are army and some marines, and they still get along! This volume is about a female veteran, who has been violated by a superior officer and by the military system, unfortunately, and has been made to feel less than normal as well as suffering PTSD from the event itself. She is convinced to start working at the custom-furniture business, and is given an apartment at a low cost and is able to buy an old truck with low payments, etc., in order to rebuild herself financially, but her biggest problem is her ability to trust and feel confident in groups of more than two- or three-. She meets a coworker, a male, who instantly agrees to install a lock on the door of her office so she will feel safe, and he tries to take her under his wing to show her around. But her own fears make her push him away, and he stays away. But eventually, his patience is rewarded as they become friends...and eventually more. Barbara Longley has a way with building characters and allowing them to have hard edges along with gentleness and understanding, and she's great with building sexual tension but allowing the characters to build trust before allowing much physical interaction. Her characters feel very real, even their sudden reactions of fear and trauma that are consistent with their illnesses and experience. She remembers that fireworks can be a problem for veterans, even though the 4th of July fireworks are a big deal in Perfect, IN, but she allows them to react the way they really would. The Ted I fell in love with in the first book of this series is back in book three. I'm so glad. What a patient, patient man he had become. And what a sweet story this is, even while it is heartbreaking.I don't pretend to have any idea what the heroine, Cory, is going through. Yet I can't help but feel that Barbara Longley did a wonderful job in getting it right. I felt Cory's fear, frustration, terror and rage. I believe it's Cory who has the thought during the story about how lucky she is to have the support of her mom and friends and coworkers. How true that is! And how sad so many women have to go through what she did on their own.I come from a very military family. I was, myself, a Navy wife for 10 years while my husband was in the service. This series of books really spoke to me. I have seen different degrees of many of the themes Longley touches on throughout the stories. We all know a romance is supposed to end with a "happily ever after", and these characters have all deserved that.I was hoping there would be another book but I think that's most likely not going to happen since this book is 2 years old. Usually they are closer together. I really was interested in hearing more about Wes...it almost seemed we were even being set up in this book to want to hear his story. When I "purchased" the first book in the series as a freebie a while back it just went into my TBR collection and I forgot about it. That was a mistake. It wasn't until a friend reminded me I bought "Far from Perfect" that I dug it out of the cloud a week ago to read. I devoured all three books, finishing "A Change of Heart" just after midnight to bring in the new year.My review isn't about only this book, but the entire series, as I've just read all three books back-to-back. This is a wonderful series, yet each book can be read on its own, about the effects of PTSD on those who have served our country in the armed forces. If you're looking for angsty romance, you've come to the right place. There were spots in each story that had me in tears. I found this book to be the most difficult with what Cory had been through, and yeah Ted seemed almost too perfect, but again if you enjoy romance with a touch of angst, a touch of humor, you'll enjoy the series.Here's to hoping there will be more stories from Perfect, Indiana!(Sorry I couldn't review just this book.
