Both fascinating and iconoclastic, the book explores the ways preservation efforts in Santa Fe and northern New Mexico reflect the continuing political power of Anglos as they have successfully marketed the region as a culturally exotic place. In order to promote the tourist industry, preservationists have presented Indian and Hispanic traditions as frozen in time and have represented these frozen pasts as “the authentic” cultures of the non-Anglo peoples of the region. I found Guthrie’s work raised questions for me about other preservation efforts—particularly in regard to the Gullah of the South Carolina and Georgia Lowcountry. Are preservationists seeking to freeze them in time in “old Gullah traditions,” to keep the Gullah quaint and exotic for the benefit of tourists hungry to be entertained Do such efforts keep the Gullah marginalized economically and politically, like the Indians and many Hispanics of New Mexico Guthrie's book is a must-read for those involved in preservation efforts, for people belonging to groups being marketed by the tourist industry as different and picturesque, and for all who are struggling with the complex questions of multiculturalism in the U. S. I found reading Guthrie’s book alongside Mahmood Mamdani's Define and Rule: Native as Political Identity (his W. E. B.
