Parts were great--the story sings when the twins are mischievously exploring their new home without permission (they live in the servants quarters of a huge Newport, RI mansion that their family had owned, but it has been turned over to a state historical society). It falters when they travel back in time to meet the 14 yr old Clara Barton. The story itself tells little about Ms. Barton--the end of the book instead tacks on a brief biographical sketch that is pretty informative. The main gist of their encounter with her in 1836 is a) there's little technology (no phones, indoor plumbing, electricity), the food is very different and tastes gamey and dry, there's no pollution, and baseball hasn't been invented yet (they teach Clara to play); and b) girls had limited opportunities and therefore limited ambitions (Clara would really like to be a soldier, which is out of the question, and being a doctor is something she's never considered). A potentially fascinating tidbit--Clara's father's stories about being a soldier during conflicts with Indians--is rushed through in a few very general paragraphs that provide little if any detail. Instead the author has Clara tell the twins that it is a fascinating story. (The author tends to rely on telling rather than showing far too much).The problem with the conceit of the book--kids discover an important document/object that takes them back in time to meet a famous person as a child--is that the reader hasn't been given enough information about the famous person to make the idea of meeting him/her interesting, the person as a child isn't yet the famous person, and so the twins meet him/her out of context, and little in their encounter sheds light on the important/mysterious document/object's significance or the person's achievements and historical importance/contributions. All of that is left to the appendix/biography. The one strength is that the twins have a good relationship with interesting tensions and problems.In sum, if you were hoping for a more sophisticated version of the Magic Treehouse books, this isn't it.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Good series, this one is a bit weak.By Rich WilsonMy 7-year-old enjoys the series, but was a bit bored with this one. We've also read Alexander Hamilton and Houdini. I know I'm picky about such things, but I was really jarred when Clara at one point declares she never eats meat, and a chapter later is eating a piece of Ham. Her being a vegetarian seemed to be a big point when it came up, so I can't see how it got past the proofreading.For a historical novel I expect more attention to detail.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Great MG ReadBy A Book VacationWhile I don’t usually seek out and read MG books, I’m really glad that the publisher gave me this novel to read at my leisure. Originally, I wasn’t sure if I would read it for review or not, but since it’s such a quick read, I decided to give it a shot, and I’m happy I did. Though definitely a novel for young readers, the story itself is interesting—with a little bit of drama, lots of snooping around, and time travel, I was hooked almost from the beginning, genuinely interested in the lives of twins Felix and Maisie, especially because they’ve had it so rough as of late. Due to their parents’ divorce, Felix and Maisie find themselves uprooted from their home and moving into the servants quarters of a 70 room mansion—a mansion their great grandfather built, but that his daughter turned over to the preservation society in order to help with its upkeep. Of course, everything is new for the twins, and the loss of their stable home has them rather upset, so it’s easy to connect with them from the start. Hood does a great job fleshing out the twins, and in no time they are exploring their new home, sneaking around the mansion when they know they aren’t supposed to, and a sense of mystery and magic permeates the story as it begins to take flight.I can see how much a 3rd-5th grader would really love this story, but I also think students as old as 9th and 10th grade would enjoy it as well. Hood really has a way with words, and this novel delivers in all the right places. While these wasn’t much in terms of Clara Barton’s story—more so frivolous information in the beginning—Hood ties it all together for Maisie and Felix, and I can see this historical fiction series becoming a favorite within the classroom.See all 5 customer reviews...
