They also facilitate the transfer of technological expertise across national and/or cultural borders. These factors alone will obviously create the conditions in which innovation generally thrives.Yes, the book is targeted mainly at academics, policy makers and graduate students in economics or business studies. But it will also be of interest, directly and indirectly, to international lawyers, many of whom might find it refreshing to see multinationals presented in such a positive light. Indeed any interested reader will be impressed by the breadth of research and the depth of rigorous analysis contained in this volume as demonstrated by its no less than twenty-five contributors from the international academic community.‘Corporate embededness, as the book’s editor, Martin Heidenreich, explains, ‘is frequently conceived as a taken for granted by-product of the location of a company or subsidiary in its home region or host country.’ This more or less defines yet perhaps oversimplifies a convoluted and complex concept, but it does seek to explain the dynamics of multinational business in a knowledge-based global economy.Heidenreich adds that as multinationals are able to choose (for the most part) where they wish to establish themselves, they thus ‘are able to exploit the institutional, political and fiscal advantages of their locations’.One can point to any number of examples here, of companies setting up either their headquarters, or subsidiaries, or both in areas where, say, the skills-base, the infrastructure and other factors such as political and economic stability, or the tax structure are mainly to their advantage. The pedigree of the book is interesting. It originated during a conference held at the University of Oldenburg, Germany in 2010 with support from various high-profile sources, including the Volkswagen Foundation and the European Union. The sheer volume of research it contains will certainly excite the interest of other researchers who will find the tables, charts, diagrams and definitely the extensive bibliographies contained in most chapters of immense value.See all 1 customer reviews...
